As the cost and time investment of a traditional four-year bachelor’s degree come under increasing scrutiny, National American University (NAU) is offering a smart solution designed to match today’s workforce demands: a three-year, online Bachelor of Science in Information Technology degree.
Three-year bachelor’s programs, common in Europe, are gaining momentum in the U.S., particularly as students seek faster, more affordable paths to high-demand careers. NAU has consistently adapted to meet the needs of non-traditional and adult learners for over 80 years and has positioned itself at the forefront of this trend.
“National American University has always been a forward-thinking institution,†said Cindy Mathena, Ph.D., President of NAU. “Our focus has been, and continues to be, helping adult learners succeed by meeting them where they are — academically, professionally and financially.â€
The BSIT – Focused program is one of the first of its kind in the country. It is an accredited IT bachelor’s degree that is online and efficiently structured to be completed in just three years. With a 135-credit curriculum, the program is designed to reduce both the time and cost typically required, without sacrificing academic rigor.
“This program was built with purpose,†said Steven Balke, Dean of NAU’s School of Business. “We listened to students, industry leaders and employers. They told us they need skilled talent faster, without compromising quality. That’s what the BSIT – Focused delivers.â€
The BSIT – Focused program allows students to choose from four career-ready specializations: cybersecurity, network administration, artificial intelligence and cloud computing. Each track prepares graduates for rapidly growing sectors within the tech industry.
The timing couldn’t be better. Rising tuition costs and growing student debt have prompted many learners to rethink the traditional college experience. Meanwhile, the IT industry continues to expand, with employers urgently seeking qualified professionals.
“The market is changing,†said Mathena. “Students are no longer looking for the traditional college experience. They’re looking for meaningful, career-relevant education that respects their time, their budget and their goals.â€
The program is ideal for working professionals, career changers, military-affiliated learners and associate degree holders. NAU offers generous transfer policies, accepting up to 94.5 credits from prior associate coursework making the BSIT – Focused program a smart next step for those looking to finish their degree efficiently. Students may also fund their education through military and employer benefits or out-of-pocket payments. Title IV federal aid eligibility is pending.
“We intentionally built this program to be flexible and accessible,†Balke said. “Whether you’re returning to school after a break or looking to upskill quickly, this program meets you at your experience level and helps you move forward.â€
NAU’s legacy of innovation includes its evolution from a business school to a fully online university with year-round scheduling and programs crafted for adult learners. The BSIT – Focused continues that legacy.
“From our earliest days, we’ve evolved alongside the needs of our students,†Mathena said. “This isn’t just a new program; it’s part of a larger vision to help learners adapt, grow and lead in a rapidly changing workforce.â€
