Police announced Friday 18-year-of Jaxon Jewett was taken into custody for allegedly shooting a man on Wednesday inĀ Rapid City in Star Village. Jewett was at large for two days before police arrested him on suspicion of attempted murder.
"His apprehension was a top priority of the RCPD, and we remain committed to allocating all appropriate resources to address public safety issues in the Star Village neighborhood," the department said in a Friday social media post.Ā
Pennington County Jail records show Jewett was booked at 7:10 p.m. on Friday. He is held on a $250,000 bail and is set to appear in court at 10 a.m. on Monday.Ā
Police were called to the 100 block of East Signal Drive to a report of a wounded adult male shortly before 4 p.m. on Wednesday. The man had a gunshot wound to the shoulder, but his injuries did not appear to be life-threatening,Ā Rapid City Police Department Lt. Kelvin Mosur told media on scene. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.Ā

When Mosur spoke with media about an hour after the shooting, police did not yet have someone in custody or a suspect description. An investigation led police to zero in on Jewett as the suspect later on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, while detectives were working on gathering information on who may have been involved, Mosur said he believed the incident was isolated and there wasn't an ongoing threat to the surrounding community or the city.Ā
The incident marks the second shooting in Star Village in recent weeks and a continuation of violent crime in the neighborhood. Star Village has the highest violent crime rates and police calls for service in the city, according to the police department.Ā As of a week ago, there were 49 reported violent crimes in Star Village so far this year.

Mike Eisenbraun, the crime reduction program manager with the police department, highlighted the work the department and the community as a whole have done in Star Village to treat the "root causes" of crime.Ā
"We continue to see this kind of bad behavior. There's a lot of good residents up here that deserve better than this," he said.Ā
The department's community engagement team holds frequent events at Star Village. Eisenbraun said a recent event garnered more than 200 attendees. Residents also hold community meals and prayer walks, along with other efforts. The city's code enforcement division is also working with the owners of the property on cleanup efforts and other issues.Ā
